Is There No Relief?

One of the many reasons I'm so down on Toronto is just how oppressively hot it can get. I've lived in some hot places (Los Angeles, Southern Spain, Vanuatu, Cuba, the Dominican, Melbourne...), but Toronto, in my opinion, is the hottest. I don't care what the number on the thermometer reads — I care how I feel. How I sweat. What a slog it is to get from place to place as a pedestrian — and, to me, there is no worse place than Toronto in the summer. (It also has the worst traffic, but that's another post.)

Anyway, there's a great long-form piece by Sam Bloch in Places Journal about Shade.

Café Joyeux

I've known about Café Joyeux since it first opened in 2017, as they managed to get a lot of press, but, there not being one in Toronto, I guess it slipped my mind. I rediscovered it again today.

If you're not familiar with the chain, they have 24 locations in France and last year opened their first in New York City. The business hires crew members with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and empowers them through meaningful training and employment. They currently employ 154 people with mental and cognitive disabilities. So, so great.

Most of the online profiles are in French, but here's one in English:

Terrific idea. Wish we had one here.

I have not left Canada since the pandemic and am itching to get in an ocean. This site is great for fantasizing.

The Millions Summer Preview

Nothing gets me opening Libby faster than The Millions Previews.

This time, it's their Summer 2024 Preview, obvs, which highlights a new biography of genius filmmaker Agnes Varda, and titles from Rachel Kushner, Joy Williams, Yoko Tawada, Honor Moore, Sarah Manguso, Virginie Despentes, Jo Hamya, László Krasznahorkai, and many more.

There are also two from authors I'm not familiar with that sound right up my alley, both due in August:

The Italy Letters by Vi Khi Nao

"This epistolary novel by Nao, an emerging queer Vietnamese American writer who Garielle Lutz once called “an unstoppable genius,” sounds like an incredible read: an unnamed narrator in Las Vegas writes sensual stream-of-consciousness letters to their lover in Italy. Perfect leisure reading on a sultry summer’s afternoon while sipping a glass of prosecco."

Having written my own share of love letters, I'll grab this one right away.

Planes Flying Over a Monster by Daniel Saldaña París, tr. Christina MacSweeney and Philip K. Zimmerman

"Over 10 essays, the Mexican writer Daniel Saldaña Paris explores the cities he has lived in over the course of his life, using each as a springboard to ponder questions of authenticity, art, and narrative. ChloĂ© Cooper Jones calls Saldaña Paris “simply one of our best living writers” and this collection “destined for canonical status.”"

And this one obviously appeals to the traveller in me. Perhaps I'll better learn how to crystallize my own adventures into more engaging fare.

Blot. For creating websites

Blot turns a folder into a website. Files become posts on your site. Drag-and-drop to publish.

There’s no interface, just files. So you can use your favorite tools to work on your site. Focus on creating.

Best to check the how-to video for a good explanation.

Write your blog with your favorite text editor. Vim or Microsoft Word, both work with Blot. Publish your photos from Lightroom. Work on your site with others using Google Docs or git."

There's no limit on storage so it's great for text-only or image-heavy sites. Quite a deal for $5 a month.

Rather ingenious.
